A man. A girl. Footsteps running. Darkness. A scream. And such anger!
With a fairly conspicuous jolt, Alpha stumbled into existence, solid feet landing hard on solid floor as he seemingly fell out of the darkness, which contorted behind him to replace what it had lost. He was shaking a little as emotions that weren’t his own flooded out of his body: no, he couldn’t listen to that, couldn’t watch that. He didn’t even know what that was, but it was clouding up his mind and he couldn’t think of better way of avoiding it than taking on his physical form and forcing himself back to Earth.
Too bright, much too bright. Alpha squinted, his eyes lifting to the lights that were interfering with the beautiful darkness the late evening had brought. With an angry glare and a click of his fingers, the lights quickly dimmed until the surrounding area was almost entirely black. Much better, now he could tell where he was. The Children of Erebus had a sixth sense, their main sense, where they could sort of feel what was in the darkness, more clearly than a human would ever see in the light.
There was grass, lots of grass. He’d landed in… a field? No, a park. He hadn’t really been concentrating on where he was, which was not a particularly smart idea. He could have been in any shadow in the world, be it in the middle of a crowd, deep in the sea, or miles up in the night sky. It was mere luck he’d ended up in a deserted… courtyard? Not a park, a courtyard. Of Tolero Academy no less. Right, so he hadn’t landed in a particularly good place. Like all his siblings, Alpha was an unregistered, almost mythical supernatural who was not particularly keen on being caught by the government, or anyone really. The teachers of this school could easily turn him in if they spotted him. But no, the place was deserted, he was safe. Probably.
Now that his thoughts were a little more ordered, and he had the mind of his physical form (which was less cluttered than that of his shadow form), the odd scenario that had forced him to Earth soon began to make sense. It was not unheard of for one Child to get flashbacks of traumatic memories from previous generations: for example, the Alpha strolling the grounds of Tolero at this moment was the Twelfth in his line, and it was possible for him to relive a memory from the Fourth Alpha, or the Fifth, or the First, or the Eleventh etc. It seemed like the most likely explanation that the flood of anger, the vague images of people and the unusual sounds, were just part of a rediscovered memory. It had drifted away now, but in the moment that it had flown through his mind, the shock of fury and violence had shaken him up a bit.
He rubbed his forehead, looking up at the night sky and trying to recall the memory he’d tried so hard to escape from. His race was not violent, not usually. They dabbled in the mortal world, only causing innocent mischief if interacting with the humans at all. Even their powers were passive: they were masters of illusion, but not one of their abilities was in any way offensive. But, like all species, their fury could overrule their natural instincts, and it wasn’t unheard of for them to fight back if something threatened them or their family. The memory seemed to be one of those times. Nevertheless, it was still rather unnerving to see such an obvious display of anger from such a playful race.
Alpha’s lips parted to release a sigh, his eyes dropping from the twinkling lights of the stars (that were still a little too bright for his liking), to the courtyard. He’d been distracted for too long, and suddenly felt quite vulnerable: he was very used to seeing everything, and being one up on the people around him, but his physical form was so easily distracted that he’d momentarily lost contact with his shadows. Goodness knows what was in them now.
